Robot Workshops

After 18 months of not going into schools, I am gradually beginning to go back and running afterschool Robot Clubs in  schools and back to running day Robot workshops.

I run One Day Robot Workshops in schools with the following themes:

  1. Space Day Workshop (suitable for Year 5 or Year 6)

  1. Robot Day Workshop (suitable for Year 4 and above) to Navigate the Mat

  1. Robot Day Workshop (suitable for Year 5 and Year 6) ending with Robot Wars using light sensors

One Day or Half Day Robot Workshops are a great way to encourage pupils to have a go at programming.

Whether your school already uses IT and you want to enhance your content and include physical systems OR you feel computer science in your school needs ‘kick starting’ because, maybe, the staff and pupils feel a little bored, Robot Workshops are an ideal vehicle to show that programming is fun and Robots can be programmed to follow instructions.

It is proposed that One Day Robot Workshops run on the following lines:

One Day Robot Workshop (9.00am to 3.15pm)

Proposed Outline

Introducing Robots (15 – 20mins) Optional Astronomy talk on current Robotic space missions OR Robots suitable for Junior whole School Assembly
4 x 1 ¼ hour sessions Introduce basics of Mindstorms software

Using Computational Thinking, program Robot to achieve challenge

Max 24 children per session

Final session with all participants(15mins) Time permitting Summary of Day including main learning points, photographs and videos. Praise members of robot groups that have performed well on the day.

The timetable can be adapted for Half Day Workshops for smaller groups. There is a minimum time of 2 hours.

The One Day Robot Workshop is an extremely busy fun day that requires a tight timetable. This ensures that all the children are able to complete the tasks. The day is suitable for two or three classes in a whole day.
